Rehabilitation of Aswan 1 Hydro Electric Power Plant

Rehabilitation of Aswan 1 Hydro Electric Power Plant
|
 |
- Aswan 1 Hydro Electric Power Plant was completed in 1960. It was designed
for a head varying between 32-10 meters. It is equipped with nine kaplan
turbines of a total output of 345 MW.
- After more than 30 years in operation, the power plant equipment has
reached a stage, where major rehabilitation become mandatory to keep them in
working condition for another similar period.
- Aswan 1 Modernization Project was instigated in August 1991.
- The contract was signed between the Egyptian Electricity Authority and a
European Consortium led by ALSTOM.
- The contract price: DM 210,850,000 plus EGP 45,700,000.
- The Contract covered seven 47 MW turbine-generator units, the Electrical
Equipment, the Instrumentation and Control System and the Water Passage.
- By August 1996, ALSTOM had concluded what was the biggest
rehabilitation and modernization project so far in the history of Egypt's hydro
electric industry.
- Technical Data for turbine generator units:
 |
Power rating (MVA) 49.5 |
 |
Unit capacity (MW) 47.0 |
 |
Rated voltage (kV.) 11 |
 |
Rated Power factor 0.95 |
 |
Rated frequency (HZ) 50 |
 |
Speed (r/min) 100 |
 |
Rator weight (t) 436.5 |
- As a conclusion for this project, the Aswan 1 Hydro Electric Power Plant
became once again one of the most advanced facilities for power generation in
Egypt, and will be supplying electricity to an energy hungry nation for a long
time to come.
