An Alstom-led consortium has won a contract worth 80 million euros from the Egyptian Electricity Holding Company (EEHC) through its affiliate company, Cairo Electricity Production Company (CEPC), to provide 2 X 350 MW steam turbine generator units and condensers to an existing gas-fired power plant in southern Cairo, Egypt. Alstom’s share amounts to 60 million euros.

Under the contract, Alstom will also carry out the erection of the equipment, and provide technical assistance and on-site training during commissioning, start-up and testing. The unit will run mainly on natural gas and use fuel oil as back-up.

The whole project will create 2,000 additional jobs during the construction phase and 800 during the operation period. The project is part of Egypt’s plans to modernise its infrastructure services. It is also supported by the World Bank’s 2003 Infrastructure Action Plan.

The plant is scheduled to commence commercial operation in 2009.

This contract follows two other projects won in Egypt by Alstom for 2 x 250 MW steam turbine/generators in the past four years, namely Cairo North II and New Talkha.

Hugues Barbier, Vice President Sales for Africa and Middle East, said: “El Tebbin is an important step in sustaining Alstom’s position in the power generation business in Egypt and puts us in a strong position for forthcoming projects. We are leader in the supply of steam turbine generators in Egypt, thanks to a combination of leading technology and good market knowledge.”
