Alstom and its partners have just signed two contracts with the National Authority for Tunnels (NAT) for Phase II (*) of Greater Cairo Metro Line 3 (Cairo Airport-Imbaba). Alstom/Thales signed the contract for Group 1 "Signalling & Centralized Control - Driving Modes & Telecommunications". Leader of this consortium, Alstom will provide the Urbalis 200 Train Control system, points machines and station signalling equipment.

Alstom/Thales signed the contract for Group 1 "Signalling & Centralized Control - Driving Modes & Telecommunications". Leader of this consortium, Alstom will provide the Urbalis 200 Train Control system, points machines and station signalling equipment.
Alstom is a member of the consortium for Group 3 led by Colas Rail, with Thales, Orascom and Arab Contractors, which signed the contract for the Electromechanical Works. It is to be mentioned that Group 2 (Civil Works, consortium led by Vinci) & Group 3 are also combined for Phase II. Alstom will design and supply electromechanical systems for the four stations on this "Abbassia-Heliopolis" section of the line: Cairo Fair - Cairo Stadium - Kolleyet EL Banat - Ahram Street .
These two new contracts follow Phase 1 of the project, for which the two consortiums were selected in January 2007. NAT renews its confidence in Alstom and has opted for technological continuity in its signalling and telecommunications systems and equipment. As a result, the delivery timetable will be shortened from eight to six years. Alstom has already supplied the signalling equipment and infrastructure for Lines 1 and 2 of the Cairo metro system, as well as the rolling stock for Line 1. This new order consolidates Alstom’s position in Egypt at a time when the country has embarked on a rail expansion initiative.
In fulfilling this contract, Alstom Transport will draw on its expertise in urban transport and metro systems in particular. To date, more than 3,000 Métropolis cars have been sold worldwide, over half in Asia. Alstom has put into service the Singapore metro’s North-East and Circle lines, the largest automated metro system in the world. In 2008, Alstom delivered the automatic metro in Lausanne, Switzerland. The same year, the company delivered and commissioned the new Communication-Based Train Control (CBTC) system on Line 2 of the Beijing metro in less than 24 months.
